Inguinal hernia surgery yesterday. I already had one side repaired over a decade ago. Now I’ve completed the whole set. My dad asked if lifting weights caused it. I said that I’m sure it contributed, but I reminded him that he just had his third hernia surgery last month, and he’s never been inside a gym, so maybe there’s just a genetic component. “You, all right? I learned it by watching you!”

Oh, the joy. Well, congrats on getting that done with.
I wonder if sitting on my ass at a computer for so many years was to blame for my hernias. They certainly didn’t run in the family, and I hadn’t lifted weights since I was a teenager.

I counted at least seven people I know who have had them who have never done heavy lifting. Honestly, I think it’s just one of the human body’s many design flaws. All that viscera being held together by a thin little membrane. I asked about replacing it with something more durable, like Kevlar, or maybe steel, but Big Scalpel says it can’t be done.

They giving you the good stuff I hope?

They gave me Dilaudid while I was still unconscious, unfortunately. I wish I’d thought ahead of time to ask them not to do that, because I knew from previous hospital visits how much I hate that drug. It gave me a sickening headache for the rest of the day. I tried to eat three times and vomited each time (which is a delightful feeling when you have three incisions in your abdomen). It finally went away after a night’s fitful sleep. But the pain hasn’t been too bad, honestly. Tylenol and Advil have been good enough.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thank you, Andrew. I’m feeling pretty normal now, though I still have a long three weeks ahead of not lifting anything heavier than 10-15 lbs.
