Whoever writes in blood and aphorisms does not want to be read but to be learned by heart.
— Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra
Well, I have never written in blood, and I have only a smattering of Nietzsche committed to memory. But I did recently donate blood to the Red Cross, which netted me $30 in gift cards, promptly applied toward more of his notebooks from Stanford University Press, so I have at least managed the minor alchemy of turning blood into aphorisms. I like to think he’d be impressed by my dedication.
